Meet Karissa Hurl, Master Grower

Karissa is an exemplary reflection of our plants, culture and most importantly, the people we are cultivating at WeedMD. As we grow, so do the opportunities to expand our talent from within. Since joining the company in 2018, Karissa has shown a drive and commitment to learn, and mentor her own peers on everything from full-cycle production (clone to harvest), to sales forecasting, budgeting and people management. She sets the organizational priorities in support of our supply commitments and future product demands.

“I’m motivated everyday by the talent, rigour and employee commitment that goes into cultivating some of the best cannabis found in Canada. Our people and our plants are a testament to the care and professionalism that makes our consistent products recognized and in constant demand."

WeedMD’s products are packaged under Color Cannabis, and Saturday Cannabis as well as Starseed Medicinal on the medical side.

Her enthusiasm to learn and share in her craft, mentoring many of our cultivation supervisors along the way with constant grace and generosity is what makes her a stand-out Master Grower. Karissa has a background in organic farming, project management and marketing media studies from Western University and Centennial College, as well as a post-graduate certificate in Cannabis Production Management.

A protégé of WeedMD’s Head of Cultivation Curtis Wallace, together they manage the day-to-day activities pertaining to the company’s cultivation and processing strategies. The reputation of our branded products is a tribute to the standards developed early on by this team – who also helped build the cultivation team in Strathroy, Ontario from 20 people to 300.

You’ll recognize our award-winning strains: Pedro’s Sweet Sativa, Ghost Train Haze, Blueberry Segal, White Shark, Ultra Sour, Mango Haze, and ACDC. Most recently, Karissa and team cycled and perfected the company’s newest strain Black Sugar Rose which will retail in Ontario in late November 2020.

WeedMD operates 20 specialized cultivation and propagation rooms inside its hybrid greenhouse. Additionally, Karissa and team oversee our 27-acre outdoor cannabis cultivation program which recently completed six outdoor harvests in its second year of outdoor operations.

Karissa is part of the team under Curtis recognized as one of the few cultivators in Canada who can confidently cycle crops year-round in a controlled commercial greenhouse environment and is also vastly experienced in an array of growing practices including outdoors.

In her spare time, Karissa and her partner Arturo can be found enjoying the active outdoors, hiking, winter camping or cozying up with their two cats in London, Ontario.
